Types of spray foam insulation

Open Cell

Open-cell spray foam insulation is a type of insulation that is sprayed onto surfaces as a liquid and expands to create a foam barrier. The foam is made up of small bubbles that are not completely closed, hence the term "open cell." This type of insulation is typically less dense and less expensive than closed-cell spray foam insulation. It has a lower R-value, meaning it is not as effective at insulating against heat loss or gain. However, open-cell spray foam insulation is an excellent choice for soundproofing and reducing noise pollution. It is also highly effective at sealing air leaks and reducing energy loss in buildings.

Closed Cell

Closed cell spray foam insulation is a type of insulation material that is made by mixing two chemicals, isocyanate and polyol resin, which expand and harden into a closed-cell foam when sprayed onto surfaces. The cells in the foam are closed and tightly packed together, making it denser and more rigid than open-cell spray foam. This type of insulation offers superior insulation and air sealing properties, making it an excellent choice for areas where air infiltration is a concern, such as roofs, walls, and crawl spaces. Closed cell spray foam insulation is also water-resistant and can help prevent mold and mildew growth.
